TRAFFIC CARE YOUTH INITIATIVE PROJECT

The project will focus on community awareness through teaching sessions on road safety. Target audiences are primary and secondary schools around Kigali city and the Southern Province. The project will also advocate for discussions with road safety leaders as a way to show decision-makers that the roads are unsafe for young people. A radio talk show campaign will also be done to spread road safety message in Rwanda.

Its goal is to contribute in the decrease morbidity and mortality related to road crashes with target of decreasing the number of traffic death and injuries among primary and secondary school in Kigali City and Southern Province by the end of May 2022.

 

ABOUT THE PROJECT LEAD

 

Amie is a medical Doctor at Kabutare District Hospital. He is the founder and president of Vision Zero Youth Council Rwanda chapter. Apart of diagnosing and treating diseases as a medical doctor, he is currently teaching and advocating for road safety in his country.

His motivation in road safety came from his experience as third year of medical school - he saw a lot of people die or sustain serious injuries that he saw were avoidable. He is dedicated to raising awareness on road safety.

Teaching sessions

As part of his Local Actions project, Nkumbuye Ami has launched numerous teaching sessions to reach students in Rwanda. During these teaching sessions, Ami talks about the importance of road safety and also gives lessons on post-crash care. Ami has launched sessions at Rango Primary School, Nyanza Primary School, Groupe Scolaire Sainte Famille, Groupe Scolaire Officiel de Butare, and more!

Teacher road safety training session

Through the Traffic Care Youth Initiative Project, Ami and his team trained teachers to become mentors when it comes to educating their students on road safety and post-crash care. During their first session to train teachers, 50 educators attended along with city decision-makers and health professionals.

For his local actions project, Ami and his team conducted a number of teaching sessions in different schools on road safety. They also did radio talk shows that target young people and the entire whole community. Ami and his team recorded engagement from Africa, Asia, Europe, and America - as a result, nearly 21,000 people have seen and interacted with the posts from Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Nkumbuye Amie presented the Rwandan Students’ Statement on Road Safety to the Traffic Police in the Southern Province. The Rwandan Students’ Statement, patterned after the Global Youth Statement for Road Safety, presents the road safety situation Rwandan students face every day. The statement identifies the key issues that worsen the road safety condition and lists down organizations that can contribute to alleviating these problems. 


Rwandan Students’ Statement Presented in schools  

Local actions winner Nkumbuye Ami and his team from Vision Zero Youth Council – Rwanda presented the Rwandan Students’ Statement on Road Safety to students at Ecole Notre Damme la Providence Karubanda to talk about the road safety situation in the area, talk about youth initiatives to further safe and sustainable mobility, and to talk about basic post-crash care responses in the event of a road crash.

Vision Zero Youth Council Rwanda is a local chapter of Vision Zero Youth Council (VZYC) New York. Currently, VZYC has 40 members ( 22 Male and 18 Female) trained in road safety and post-crash care. The goal of the organization is to achieve zero death and fatalities related to road crashes by 2050.
