TOGETHER FOR SAFER SCHOOL JOURNEYS

TOSS-365 is a one year road safety project which aims to foster youth leadership in advocating for safer school journey. The project is to be implemented in Eastern Uganda in close collaboration with key stakeholders including in and out of school youth, traffic police, parents as well as cultural and religious leaders.

TOSS-365 will employ three key approaches to achieve its goals, specifically the peer-to-peer approach, stakeholder partnerships, and volunteer mentorship.

The goal of the project is to create safer school journeys for young people through reduction of road traffic injuries around 3 school zones in Eastern Uganda by 2022.

ABOUT THE PROJECT LEAD

Olivia is a young female on a mission to recourse the traffic experiences of children and youth in Uganda and Africa at large. She is the founder of UZIMA ARI Uganda, a youth-led organization working to empower young people to lead, advocate and implement local actions geared towards achieving global health and I also serve on the board of the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety.

PROJECT UPDATES

Awareness campaign launched in uganda through local actions

Local actions winner, Oliva Nalwadda and her team conduct three radio talk shows on speed limits within school zones to commemorate the global road safety week. They also talked about #LOVE30 to create awareness on the need for reduced speed around school zones and busy city centers. The talk shows helps provides public awareness about road safety and 30 km/h while the pandemic led to school closures.

Youth-led road safety advocacy meetings with PTA school structures

Local actions winner Oliva Nalwadda facilitates a youth-led road safety advocacy meeting with the Parent-Teacher Association structure to talk about installing road safety infrastructures in the area. These structures will be put in place to protect students within the school zones and also promotes conversations on keeping students safer on their journeys to school.
