SAFER STREET PARTICIPATORY DESIGN WITH YOUTH

BY TITIS EFRINDU BANOWO FROM INDONESIA

The project aimed to improve the road safety near schools with youth involvement and participatory design approach, which involved youth learning and practising road safety risk assessment in surrounding areas based on their experiences.

The approach aimed to raise collective awareness on road safety issues among children. In the participatory design phase, youth took part in providing solutions based on group workshops and discussions.

To assess the safer street design made by youth, the project used iRAP’s Star Rating for Schools tool to analyse the safety of the road.

The project’s goal was to have zero road traffic fatalities around 1 junior high school located in the Sekolah Menengah Pertama Negeri (SMPN) area by 2022.
